Jack English travelled to Swindon to compete in a cycling Kermesse, an event similar to a criterium but on a larger scale. The course was five kilometres in length, of which the competitors completed 15 laps in a time of just under two hours. Temperatures were high with a maximum recorded temperature of over 30 degrees.
On the second lap Jack got in a break with two other riders, one of the riders was the series leader, the other a race favourite. However after three laps clear the peloton reeled the break back in. Shortly after another break of three went up the road. The peloton kept the break in sight for a number of laps, however they soon extended their lead to twenty five seconds.
After initially thinking the break wasn't a threat, Jack had his work cut out to bring the group of three back before the finish. Because the race was part of a series and two of the strongest teams were represented in the break, Jack did much of the work to chase it down. On the final lap Jack had brought the gap down to under ten seconds. By this point the race was nearing the final kilometre and many of the riders with fresh legs came to the fore. Unfortunately Jack had let the break get too much of an advantage, and finished in the middle of the peloton after a bunch sprint.
