Welcome to the Guernsey Velo Club’s Youth section. This section of our club is sponsored by the Ian Browns Cycle Shop, Watts & Co, Ravenscroft Construction and PraxisIFM Group, and we are very grateful for their support in helping us develop children’s cycling in Guernsey. Here you will find a brief summary of the activities we can offer children, and as you read on you will realise that as your child grow older more and more opportunities become available to them within the sport of cycle racing.
Over the recent years Guernsey Velo Club has offered a number of activities for children under the age of 16, based at Delancey Park, they are:
- The PraxisIFM Flyers racing league, this starts on Wednesday 4th May and will run through to mid August with the last race meeting being on Wednesday 17th August; further information on the Racing League will be released nearer the start of the summer season. The race programme covers children from age 6 to 15 years of age (school years 1 to 10), please note we will no longer be catering for children in Reception year.
- Members in Under 10/12 age categories and some of the even younger riders can also take part in other MTB races that form part of the senior race calendar, these races normally take place on a Sunday morning and occasionally on a Thursday evening are suited to the slightly more capable rider. Children who are in the U10 age category and older and have a Road Bike can also take part in ‘closed circuit’ races held either at Delancey park or other venues across the Island.
- Children between the ages of 12 and 18 move through the Club’s Academy. The aim of the academy is to provide a development programme that suits a wide range of rider ability and aspirations covering all forms of cycle racing. The Academy has a very comprehensive race programme here in Guernsey and many of the riders will have the opportunity to race in suitable events in the UK where a number of the Academy’s riders have achieved success at National level.
