The three S's, sunshine, smiles and sweat were all on show at Delancey Park for Round 2 of the GVC Juniors criterium league.
Using the purpose laid tarmac track at Delancey, a total of 49 riders were divided into three age groups U8's, U10-U12's and U14-U18's. Each age group raced two races of differing numbers of laps.
The youngest age group, U8's, got the night off to a flying start with those on road bikes starting a few seconds ahead of those on MTB's. Cycling at speed and amongst other riders takes good bike handling skills and the youngsters did themselves proud in the fast paced races of 3 laps and 4 laps. Two superb rides by Thomas Le Tissier saw him taking first place honors in both races. Charlie Tourtel and Monty Desforges both had excellent races finishing 2nd and 3rd in race 1. Charlie had another podium place in race 2 finishing 3rd just behind Katie Le Cheminant.
The action notched up a gear when the U10 and U12's took to the track. After 5 laps the eventual winner of race 1 was Finley Mechem with Jake Le Roux and Jack Francart chasing hard behind to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. Sam Hancock was the first U10 rider over the finish line in that race. Their second race saw Fin claim victory again.
For those of us that have watched the UK Criterium tour series on TV, where our own Tobyn Horton excels, you know you have a great pool of Guernsey talent coming through when watching the U14 -U18's race. At brake neck speeds on a track, bike handling skills and awareness are paramount on a track that sees sharp cornering come up in a blink of an eye.
Two hard fought races saw Brad Vaudin take the honors in race 1 closely followed by Alex Van Katwyk and Jack Hoskins.
A slight jockeying of positions throughout race 2 in the leading bunch meant it came down to a sprint finish, with Jack Hoskins taking the overall win.
The fastest recorded lap time of the night was 48.33 seconds by Alex Van Katwyk.
Round 3 returns to the Track at Victoria Avenue on 13 June.
