Guernsey Velo Club Downhill Series Round 1 Sponsored by Adventure Cycles took place at Petit Bot on Sunday. The overnight heavy rain had completely soaked the Petit Bot course, leaving the technical and obstacle sections with conditions that were very muddy and slippery.
26 riders took to the start and were set off in one minute intervals with the faster riders towards the end of the running. Each rider has the opportunity to race the course twice and the fastest run is counted. The top four riders were separated by only half a second with the battle being won by Dan Owen who was the only rider riding the course in under 1 minute with a time of 59.7 seconds, John Mapley was just 0.32 seconds behind in a time of 1.00.02 to take second and Alistair Martin in third just 0.03 seconds behind, completed the Podium on the day.
The Guernsey Velo club were delighted to welcome 7 new riders to the downhill series, showing that all spheres of Guernsey cycling is continuing to grow. They were also delighted that see that two junior riders rode into the top 10 overall with very impressive times. Joe Collenette came in 6th place overall in a time of 01:04:01 and Ben Mills came in 8th place in a time of 01:05:89.
The Ladies class was won by junior Megan Dowinton who is continuing to improve from last year with both the her speed and technical ability with Heather Despres in second who was competing in her first downhill.
