Guernsey Velo Club’s Watts Academy riders again did themselves proud at the regional GHS qualification event held in Hampshire this week. Alex Van Katwyk took the overall win and 8 of the local riders qualified to ride in the final to be held in September after winning their respective age groups.
The top five places were filled with Guernsey Velo riders with Alex Van Katwyk taking the win, Brad Vaudin 2nd, Sam Culverwell 3rd, Jack Hoskins 4th and Ethan Farrell in 5th.
This year the youngsters had a very hilly course with a lot of climbing. Alex said after the race, “we had trained hard on hills so we were well prepared. After a 4 mile steady climb it flattened out into the New Forest, at 7 miles I was 6 seconds down on Brad and managed to gain 17 seconds on the last 3 miles. The course was undulating and we reached speeds of 40 mph, with a tight left hand turn into the lane to the finish. We also had to cross one cattle grid on the course. I won my age group as well as winning overall by 11 seconds with the fastest time. I am looking forward to the final at which I will have to try and defend my title.”
The riders who won their age groups and who have qualified for the final in September are, Alex Van Katwyk, Brad Vaudin, Sam Culverwell, Jack Hoskins, Louis Le Cheminant, Heather Despres, Amy Sharpe and Katie Halliday.
