On Friday 25 September Alex Van Katwyk travelled to England to represent the South district in the 2015 Inter-Regional Road Championship. There were 13 districts from across England, Wales and Ulster. Each region had a team of 4 boys and 4 girls. On the Friday afternoon they had an individual time trial which was 2 laps of a 2.9k course around the grounds of Thoresby Hall, Ollerton, Nottinghamshire. Alex did well in this event, having won the 10 mile time trial 2 weeks earlier, he placed 11th out of 52 boys all of which were 15 to 16 year olds.
All the teams stayed at a Hotel near Sheffield and had some early starts to get to the venue on time. On the Saturday they had a 500 metre uphill sprint with a tight bend. They had an individual run at this and then put into heats of 4 boys. As most of the boys are track racers Alex found it hard to keep to their pace, he came 39th. Saturday afternoon was a team time trial which they had 2 runs at and their best time counted. This race was very close and there was only 4 seconds between 1st and 13th place.
Sunday saw a 24 lap 70k road race with 52 boys and a track that was only 6 foot wide in places. Alex found it hard to keep with the main peloton, he slipped off the back on the 6th lap but managed to sprint back to the peloton. Unfortunately he got dropped again and in the end was pulled from the race and came 36th. At the end of a great three days racing the South Team came 7th out of 13 teams.
